New Food Waste Service
Stafford Brough Council is soon to introduce and new free to use food waste collection service.

New kerbside food waste collection service
Why is this happening?
Food waste makes up around a third of domestic rubbish and accounts for around £800 of edible food being throws by an average household every year. This waste currently goes for incineration.
Stafford Borough Council is launching the new weekly food waste collection service. This initiative is part of a countywide rollout supported by Staffordshire County Council in response to the UK government’s “Simpler Recycling” requirements.
The government’s simpler recycling initiative (gov.uk) requires that all local councils roll out a separate food waste service in 2026.
By collecting food waste separately, the Council can:
- turn food waste into energy and bio-fertiliser via anaerobic digestion
- help you to see what food is being wasted in your house
- free up more room in your general waste bin if needed
How much will this cost individual households?
There is no charge for kerbside food waste collections.
New food waste caddy
The new external food waste caddies will start to be delivered from 16 March 2026
Every household will receive:
- a small kitchen caddy (7L) to collect food waste indoors
- a larger kerbside caddy (23L) to present for weekly collection
- a roll of liners (optional to use)
- detailed instructions on how to recycle your food waste
When will the service start?
The new service will start on 13 April 2026.
The external food waste caddy will be emptied on your usual collection day and should be placed alongside your waste and recycling bins and be visible from the road.
