Freedom of Information

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), parish councils are legally defined as public authorities and have a mandatory obligation to provide public access to official information.

Primary Legal Duties

  • Adopt a Publication Scheme: Councils must proactively publish routine information (e.g., minutes, policies, financial reports) using the ICO Model Publication Scheme.
  • Respond to Individual Requests: Anyone can request recorded information. The council must confirm if it holds the data and provide it within 20 working days.
  • Provide Advice and Assistance: Councils must help requesters clarify or narrow down their requests.
