VE Day – 80th Anniversary

Talk in the Village Hall

Scheduled: 9 May 2025 - 19:00 to 21:30

May 8th 1945 is celebrated as ‘Victory in Europe Day’ (VE Day). Whilst this is true for the majority of people living in Britain, May 8 th is not celebrated as the end of World War II for a small, often overlooked, part of the British Isles. This fascinating talk titled ‘VE Day May 8th – Not Quite!’ tells the story of this part of the British Isles which were invaded by the German forces in 1940, were subjected to the brutal regime of military control, and after D – Day the population was almost starved to death. It is the only part of the British Isles to have been occupied by Germany, who set up work camps to enable huge fortifications to be built in a very short space of time.
